Curatorial Statement
I am exploring the symbiotic relationship between glass and metal. Glass encapsulates life within the present, while metal clenches an eternal postulation. I am using materiality to explore how my contemporary identity and perspective interrelate to my cultural knowledge and understanding. The pieces within this project are case studies into the beginning of an extensive introspection project. I am using this project to attain a better understanding of the abstract depths within my mind. This installation represents a hidden place in the forest. In traditional times, only a few of my ancestors would take our masks and hide them deep in the forest where they would not be found until they were ready to be used at the correct time. When westernization arrived, most of these masks were forgotten in the woods. The hanging cylinders represented abstracted trees, as the forest mirrors the deep recesses of my mind.Having to search, contemplate, and comprehend, this installation is the representation of the discovering of my identity and perspective. Using the foundation of knowledge of my culture while incorporating my contemporary identity, this project expresses the spirituality and culture I practice for myself.
